Interactive: North Korea wakes up world with nuclear test
The shaking was metaphorical and real in Asia and North America on Monday night.
North Korea conducted its third nuclear test, which set off seismic waves strong enough to be felt in Japan. Here is the news story from the Associated Press.
The U.N. Security Council is now working on a resolution.
The country is moving toward building a nuclear weapon that could fit on a missile. Last year, it tested a rocket capable of reaching the U.S., and Seattle, although a world where North Korea wants to take down the Space Needle sounds like a movie plot by Matt and Biz Stone. More likely the country would take out the naval base Kitsap Bangor. I’ll stop laughing now.
Here is an interactive map of North Korean’s nuclear facilities from the Associated Press.
I was glued to Steve Herman’s Twitter feed Monday night. Herman is the Voice of America’s Northeast Asia bureau chief. Here are some of his updates:
#Japan defense min. Onodera in VOA interview after #DPRK nuke test today:Japan will need to bolster its defenses.

Fresh comment from Pyongyang radio: #DPRK will carry out “more intensive 2nd, 3rd follow-up countermeasures” if US doesn’t end hostility.
