Video: A debate about gun initiatives I-591 and I-594

Corrected version

Confused about the two state initiatives coming in the Nov. 4 election about gun control and gun rights? Check out our editorial board interviews with supporters and opponents of Initiative 591 and Initiative 594. TVW produced video of the interviews.

Initiative 591 would prevent Washington state from background checks for gun buyers that are stricter than the national standard. Here is the text of Initiative 591. Supporters of I-591 want to eliminate potential laws that would make it harder to buy a gun.

Initiative 594 would require background checks for buyers at gun shows and some private transfers. Here is the text of Initiative 594. Supporters of 594 want to make it harder to buy a gun in Washington state.

The debate on Initiative 591 featured:
Supporters: Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation based in Bellevue, and Robin Ball, owner of Sharp Shooting Indoor Range & Gunshop in Spokane
Opponents: Cheryl Stumbo, survivor of the Jewish Federation shooting in Seattle, and Kelly Bernardo
Seattle Times editorial board members: Kate Riley, Lance Dickie, Erik Smith, Thanh Tan and Sharon Pian Chan

The debate about Initiative 594 featured:
Supporters: Dan Satterberg, King County prosecuting attorney, and Cheryl Stumbo, survivor of the Jewish Federation shooting in Seattle
Opponents: Alan Gottlieb, Second Amendment Foundation, and Brian Judy, attorney for the National Rifle Association
Seattle Times editorial board members: Kate Riley, Lance Dickie, Erik Smith, Thanh Tan and Sharon Pian Chan

Stay tuned to The Seattle Times opinion section for our editorial board’s recommendations on how to vote on both initiatives. The opinion section will also feature guest opinion columns on the issue before Nov. 4.
