They’ve set the matchup for the 10th annual Battle in Seattle, one of the highlights of the December sports calendar in Seattle, and Idol Sports and Entertainment has come up with another good one for No. 10. It’s Kansas State against Gonzaga Dec. 15 at KeyArena.
The Zags figure to be ranked somewhere, probably between 15 and 20, entering the season. They could be on the bring of something big, with guards Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell Jr. having productive freshman seasons behind them.
K-State features a really good shooting guard in Rodney Magruder (15.8 ppg last season), who could be a Big 12 player-of-the-year candidate, and a lot of size and athleticism. Magruder had 30 points in K-State’s final victory of the 2011-12 season, which happened to come against Southern Miss in Pittsburgh, the same site where Gonzaga was placed in the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats lost to Syracuse just before the Zags fell to Ohio State on March 17 in the third round.
Bruce Weber, one of the good guys in coaching, took over the K-State job after he was ousted at Illinois, succeeding Frank Martin after his departure for South Carolina. Weber had the Illini in the 2011 Battle in Seattle, beating Gonzaga, 73-61.
