A salute to George Hickman . . .

I didn’t really know the story of George Hickman and his role among the famed Tuskegee Airmen until recent years. I just knew him as a consistent ray of warmth when you entered the press box at Husky Stadium or the hallway near the UW basketball locker room, where he served as an usher.

Hickman, who died over the weekend at 88, was one of those people who made you feel good. He always had a kind word to say about something you’d written, or just a comment that reinforced what a good person he was. You could tell he enjoyed his job, and I can’t imagine anybody not feeling better for those moments they were around him.

In a week’s time, we’ve lost two people whose human touch was powerful, Kathi Goertzen and George Hickman. The world is a poorer place.
