Stanford with the first big strike on signing day . . .

On Wednesday’s national football letter-of-intent signing day, Stanford just made a significant strike when it signed 5-star defensive end Solomon Thomas (6-3, 255) of Coppell, Texas. Thomas had narrowed his list to Arkansas and UCLA in addition to the Cardinal.

One of the story lines of today will center on Steve Sarkisian and USC and whether the Trojans can finish on some key, high-profile recruits like Gardena (Calif.) cornerback Adoree Jackson, Bellflower (Calif.) guard Damien Mama and safety Juju Smith of Long Beach, Calif. UCLA is tracking those three closely but they’re thought to be leaning toward USC, although Oregon is also a factor with Smith.

Expect strong ratings from the classes at Arizona State, Stanford and Arizona, although the nationally top classes will again be strongly tilted toward the Southeastern Conference.
