The first Northwest 11: Zags rule (big surprise)

Monday marks our first 2014-15 edition of the Northwest 11 rankings, composed of the Division 1 basketball teams in Oregon and Washington, plus Idaho and Boise State.

Seems to be to be a stronger collective group than last year, with six teams ranked in the top 103 of CBSSports.com’s RPI rankings.

1. Gonzaga (14-1) . . . A whisper away — a possession at Arizona — from being unbeaten

2. Washington (11-3) . . . In eight days, season suddenly took a U-turn

3. Oregon (11-3) . . . We’ll know more about Ducks after Thursday-night game with Arizona

4. Eastern Washington (11-4) . . . G Harvey’s 39 vs. Weber gives him national scoring lead (23.4)

5. Boise State (10-5) . . . Ankle sidelines Drmic, second-leading scorer, for the season

6. Washington State (7-7) . . . Victory at Cal was a big step forward for Kent and Co.

7. Oregon State (9-4) . . . At 6-3, G Gary Payton II averages 8.4 rebounds

8. Portland (10-5) . . . Pilots salty, but need G Bailey back from foot injury

9. Idaho (7-6) . . . Mike Scott No. 2 nationally in assist-turnover ratio (5.38-1)

10. Portland State (7-5) . . . Leading scorer DaShaun Wiggins hits .444 on threes

11. Seattle U. (7-7) . . . Knee injury to C Sunderhaus clouded Redhawks’ season
