Bezos’ gay-marriage donation his largest ever

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ attention-grabbing $2.5 million pledge to defend Washington’s gay-marriage law dwarfs any of his previous political giving.

Despite his wealth and national prominence, Bezos has not typically been a major player in local politics. He has given a smattering of contributions to local politicians, including U.S. Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, and Gov. Chris Gregoire.

Bezos’ largest political donation prior to this was $100,000 against 2010’s proposed state income tax on the wealthy, according to state Public Disclosure Commission records. He also gave $100,000 in support of a failed charter schools measure in 2004, and $10,000 in support of a failed transportation-tax package in 2002.

Does Bezos’ “game-changer” contribution today (made along with his wife, MacKenzie) signal a new era of political involvement?
