U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler announced Tuesday that her unborn child has been diagnosed with Potter’s Syndrome, a serious medical condition that is often fatal.
In a Facebook post, Herrera Beutler wrote that a second doctor has confirmed the diagnosis, which was discovered during a recent routine ultrasound.
Herrera Beutler described the condition as “abnormally low amniotic fluid caused by impaired kidney function which inhibits normal lung development.”
“There is no medical solution available to us,” Herrera Beutler wrote. “We are praying for a miracle.”
A 34-year-old Camas Republican and second-term congresswoman, Herrera Beutler and her husband, Daniel Beutler, announced last month they were expecting their first child.
On Tuesday, the couple asked for prayers and privacy.
Herrera Beutler said she does not expect the development to affect her work in Congress.
