Former Democratic State Auditor Brian Sonntag will be joining the Freedom Foundation, a conservative Olympia think tank, as its “senior fellow for government accountability.”
Sonntag served a 20-year stint as state auditor before deciding not to run again for office in 2012. He endorsed Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna in his unsuccessful 2012 bid for the governor’s office.
Sonntag, in a phone interview, said his post with the Freedom Foundation “is real part-time, a couple of days a month.”
He expects his duties will largely consist of occasionally speaking to groups about the need to be involved with government, as well as “working with government officials and making sure they know how to act and keep the doors open.”
The Foundation, in a news release, called Sonntag’s move “a great fit.”
“We have worked with Brian his whole time in office,” Foundation CEO Jonathan Bechtle said in a statement. “He is a respected leader who has risen above partisanship, standing up for citizens against government waste, fraud, and inefficiency.”
