Proposition 1 defeat still clear, despite tiny gain in votes today

New ballot counts Wednesday afternoon show tiny percentage gains and an insurmountable deficit for Proposition 1, the King County measure to increase sales tax and car-tab fee, to fund buses and roads.

Proposition 1 now has 187,324 yes votes, 0r 45.49 percent; the no side has 224,441 votes, or 54.51 percent. That compares to 44.72 percent approval in the first counts Tuesday night.

Already, transit supporters in Seattle are preparing a city-only initiative, to raise property taxes and pay for in-city bus service. County officials have warned of a 16 percent service cut to King County Metro Transit, without new sources of revenue.
