TACOMA — Rep. Roger Freeman has died at age 48 after battling cancer for the past year.
The News Tribune of Tacoma reports that Freeman, a Democrat from Federal Way, died Wednesday. The Franciscan Health System confirmed to the newspaper that Freeman died at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way.
Freeman, who was diagnosed with colon cancer early last year, had been optimistic he would be able to serve a second term, even after he started receiving treatment for liver cancer. Previously a Federal Way City Council member, Freeman was elected to his first term in the Legislature in 2012.
His death comes less than a week before the election. His name will remain on the ballot for 30th District voters, who are choosing between Freeman and Republican Jack Dovey.
Freeman is survived by his wife, Sonya, and two children.
