Russian President Vladimir V. Putin signed the law last month making promotion of ”nontraditional” sexual relations among minors subject to fines and prosecution.
The New York Times said the law is so vague that it is widely interpreted in Russia as a broader effort to restrict open advocacy of homosexuality.
“We have not yet seen any assurances that I think are going to be necessary to make the Olympics possible,” Smith said in the interview, which aired again Monday.
Asked if he would support a boycott absent those assurances, Smith said, “yes.”
Last week, Vitaly L. Mutko, Russia’s sports minister, said gay and lesbian athletes are welcome to compete, but “should respect the laws” of the host country.
