Popcorn & Prejudice: A Movie Blog

A little Austen, for the weekend

It only seems right to end my first full week of Popcorn & Prejudice with a nod to Jane Austen, who I sincerely hope has recovered from all the rolling in her grave that she had to do when The Jane Austen Book Club came out. But I like to think that Ms. Austen, for whom I claim a teeny bit of personal knowledge, would have approved of Emma Thompson’s adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility.”
Here’s my favorite moment from that movie, at the very end (don’t watch if you’ve never seen the movie and don’t want the ending revealed — though it’s not as if you can’t guess it from the beginning). I love how a sobbing Thompson holds up a hand to Hugh Grant as he tries to explain (an early use of “Talk to the hand”?); how Mrs. Dashwood instantly ushers everyone else out of the room, without a word; and how Thompson’s smile is a sudden, irresistible sunburst. Aw. Now I’m all verklempt. Have a lovely and well-mannered weekend, everyone.
