Honoring the departed

Whoever thought of having Queen Latifah sing that slow, lovely version of “I’ll Be Seeing You” over the Academy’s traditional tribute to those who died in the past year deserves some applause: It was dignified and beautiful. Among the many honored: Roy Scheider, Isaac Hayes, Ricardo Montalban, Jules Dassin, Charlton Heston, Anthony Minghella, Sydney Pollack, and Paul Newman, who received the place of honor at the end. To answer a question I’m already hearing: Heath Ledger was not included because he died over a year ago, and was honored at last year’s ceremony.
