Academy Awards: ratings up, reviews mixed

I’m a little Oscared-out today, as no doubt are you. So just a brief post. Show producers Bill Condon and Lawrence Mark are breathing sighs of relief this morning upon hearing that the show’s ratings were up 13 percent from last year (which was a record low). This year’s show is still the third-smallest audience in the past 40 years, but hey, the numbers are moving up.
Does this mean that we can look forward to more dance numbers in Oscar’s future? Reaction I’m hearing and reading is all over the map, without much middle ground; some adored Hugh Jackman and the glitzy production numbers, some despised them. It does seem that Condon and Mark succeeded at perhaps their most basic goal: Viewers weren’t bored.
