Popcorn & Prejudice: A Movie Blog

April showers bring . . . May blockbusters?

The summer movie season starts next week, no matter what the weather forecasters are saying — each Friday in May has a potential blockbuster coming out. (June is less busy; July crowded again), and it’ll be an interesting battle to see who wins the May box-office race. Things start off with “Wolverine” on May 1, followed by “Star Trek” May 8, “Angels & Demons” May 15, “Terminator Salvation” May 21 (don’t ask me why it’s opening on a Thursday, but it is), and the new Pixar movie “Up” on May 29.
But here’s something interesting about this blockbuster month: Where are all the movie stars? Other than Hugh Jackman in “Wolverine” (who’s had as many flops as hits on the big screen) and Tom Hanks in “Angels & Demons” (who’s only starred in one major feature film since “Da Vinci Code” in 2006), there aren’t a lot of big names here. Christian Bale, in “Terminator Salvation,” hasn’t quite reached the level at which people describe something as “a Christian Bale movie”; “Star Trek” is filled with new blood; and the big star voice in “Up” is (I love this) Ed Asner. For movies starring the likes of Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and Meryl Streep, we’ll all just have to wait until later in the summer. Here’s a peek at Streep as Julia Child in “Julia & Julia,” though, just for fun:
