Costume of the week (or the year)

Lavish period movies are no longer in fashion, and period costumes turn up in fewer and fewer movies. So it’s a pleasure to see something like “Cheri,” directed by Stephen Frears and written by Christopher Hampton (opening in theaters Friday), in which every scene is a ravishing depiction of the Belle Epoque in Paris — that prewar period where clothing was lavish, haute couture was invented, and those who lived well lived very well indeed. Michelle Pfeiffer (whose beauty is unrivalled) wears a series of dazzling costumes in the film, designed by Consolata Boyle (“The Queen”). All are lovely, but my favorite is this green velvet concoction, which Pfeiffer’s character wears to make a routine social call. It’s a gown that subtly conveys its wearer’s sense of personal style — an unusual yet becoming color, a bold necklace, an almost-too-big hat — and I want one just like it. Now.
