Oscar news: 10 best picture nominees this year

OK, this is kind of out of left field: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced today that this year’s Academy Awards will include ten nominees for Best Picture, rather than the customary five. Academy president Sid Ganis noted that before 1944, the category usually contained a larger number of contenders (up to 12 in 1934 and 1935, back when the category was still called “Outstanding Production”). “Having 10 best picture nominees is going [to] allow academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize,” Ganis said.
Hmm. Well, why not? It’ll get some more titles out there, and might make campaigning livelier. Now, if the Academy would just decide to release vote totals, then we’d be really on to something . . ..
