Popcorn & Prejudice: A Movie Blog

Around the world with Meryl Streep

It appears to be rapidly turning into Meryl Streep Week here at Popcorn & Prejudice, and that’s fine by me. Fifteen Oscar nominations (and surely “Julie & Julia” will bring number 16), and the lady still shows up on late-night talk shows and merrily recounts how she had to stuff her bra with paper towels in order to get Sydney Pollack to cast her in “Out of Africa.” What’s not to love?
So here’s a fun Streep video from Slate that takes us on a tour of some of her most notable accents, from Polish (“Sophie’s Choice”) to Danish (“Out of Africa”) to Irish (“Dancing at Lughnasa”) to android (“A.I.”). I’m guessing they didn’t teach android at the Yale School of Drama. Though a few of my favorite Streep roles weren’t on the video — “The Devil Wears Prada,” “The Hours,” and “Kramer vs. Kramer,” to name a few — it’s a nice reminder of thirty-plus years of screen performances that are unexpected and unique and delicious, every time. And what’s your favorite Streep role?
