“All About Eve” (most definitely not Steve)

The only thing for which I can thank the really quite awful Sandra Bullock movie “All About Steve” is putting “All About Eve” back in my head, where it belongs. So here, for the holiday weekend, is a little bit of Bette. Those wonder what the phrase “chewing the scenery” means should examine this scene closely; it’s an example of the very best of the art. Davis saunters tipsily, speaks acidly, glares like an ice bullet, and has a bit of running business with a chocolate that’s priceless. (Will she eat it? No . . . no . . . . and yes, popped into her mouth with fierce decisiveness, as if it might melt if she stared at it.) “All About Eve” turns 59 this year, and it’s a movie of unrivalled pleasures. Enjoy the clip — and the long weekend.
