Tom Ford’s “A Single Man”

Though I’m home from Toronto and now busily untangling an expense report (it’s a sobering thing to look at actual documented record of one’s Diet Coke consumption), I’m still watching the news of the fest, which continues through Saturday. It still looks like the most talked-about movie there is one I missed: Tom Ford’s “A Single Man.” The film, an adaptation of a Christopher Isherwood novel set in early-’60s California, is a drama about a gay college professor (Colin Firth) who learns at the movie’s beginning that his lover has died. Why the buzz? a) It’s the only movie so far to be acquired at TIFF for a seven-figure sum, by the Weinsteins, who are surely already planning an Oscar campaign. b) Firth is fresh off a best actor win at last week’s Venice Film Festival for the performance. c. It co-stars Julianne Moore (who’s busy these days, with three films in Toronto, also including “Chloe” and “The Privates Lives of Pippa Lee”) and Nicholas Hoult, the now-grown-up kid actor of “About a Boy.” d) Tom Ford has the year’s most interesting filmmaker resume: He’s a fashion designer — formerly creative director of Gucci and Yves St. Laurent Rive Gauche, and perhaps best known among mortals for his 2006 Vanity Fair magazine cover alongside the very naked Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley — and has never made a feature film before.
Though there are some minor plot spoilers in this New York Times item, it does answer the question most pressing on my mind: What did Ford wear while directing? (According to the photo, a snappy three-piece suit, minus jacket.) No word when we might see “A Single Man” in theaters, but if an Oscar push is planned, look for it late in the year.
