Polanski, “Anvil” and other Tuesday thoughts

Everyone online, it seems, is buzzing about Roman Polanski’s arrest, and everyone has an opinion. Mine? I’m with Kate Harding in Salon: The man raped a 13-year-old and fled punishment. Those are the undisputed facts, and that is what matters. Though he is a truly great filmmaker, I’m shedding no tears for his incarceration — and I’m genuinely disturbed that so many members of the film community, in the past two days, seem to be saying that great filmmakers should be above the law. Enough said.
On to something more positive. Sasha Gervasi’s documentary “Anvil! The Story of Anvil,” which has quite possibly the worst title I’ve ever heard, comes out on DVD today, and anyone who relishes the idea of a real-life “This Is Spinal Tap” story should check it out. I didn’t think I could, by any stretch of the imagination, become a fan of a metal band. I was wrong; this irresistible movie has a way of making everyone who watches it into an Anvil groupie.
And on a completely random note: Was anybody else out walking yesterday afternoon, when the skies were still mostly clear but the wind was blowing the dry leaves into little dances on the sidewalk? It was glorious, if a tad Wizard-of-Oz-just-before-the-tornado. Very cinematic. Welcome, fall.
