“Big Love” kicks off the season with a corpse — and no bacon

Is there something wrong with me that last night’s episode of “Big Love” made me really, really want a BLT? One that Adaleen made for me?
Yes, I know this is a movie blog, but I made an exception for “Mad Men” and I think I’m going to make another one here, because this is the show that I watch when “Mad Men” isn’t on (though HBO makes it difficult — hasn’t it been a year since last season?), and it’s just so crazy I can’t resist. If you’re a “Big Love” watcher (and if you’re not, off you go and we’ll see you tomorrow, when regularly scheduled movie programming returns), here are some questions to ponder; feel free to add a few of your own.
— Were any of the rest of you secretly holding out some hope that Roman wasn’t actually dead? Not a chance; his frozen corpse was all over this episode, like an especially scary Popsicle. It was touching to see Nicki’s breakdown (“Papa’s dead!”), hilarious to see Lura’s triumph (whipping out the bottle of Coors, like it was vintage champagne), and alarming to see Adaleen’s collapse. She’s not dead, of course. She can’t be. I’ll go on a “Big Love” strike if Adaleen’s dead.
— Has there ever been a better insincere apology than “I was wrong in attempting to hasten your demise,” as muttered by Lois to Frank? And how scary are those two together? I predict one of them will not be alive by the end of season; couldn’t tell you which one, though.
— How strange was it to watch the ever-poised Barb out of her element? And didn’t the casino-goers get sick from eating those unrefrigerated crab legs?
— What’s Kara Lynn up to? Nicki’s recently discovered progeny is her mother’s daughter, no doubt. When she told her father (played by Zeljko Ivanek, looking like the unholy spawn of John Malkovich and Peter Sarsgaard) that she didn’t like life in the suburbs and wanted to go back to Kansas with him, was she lying? Or was she lying to NIcki?
— Was Ben’s Christian rock band meant to be funny, or meant to be embarrassing? And, based on the clips HBO chose to show us in recapping last season, looks like the possibly fatal attraction he has for Margene will rear its head again.
— Where’s Wanda?
— Is Sarah finally going to be allowed to be happy this season? Amanda Seyfried is, once again, the brief voice of sanity on this show; pity she was barely in this episode. She’ll be leaving the show to focus on her movie career after this season; I’m hoping they’ll have a nice send-off for her character, who’s been sweetly miserable for most of “Big Love.”
Did you watch? What did you think?
