“Arthur” remake; and one last SIFF weekend

I guess this is ’80s remake weekend, with “The Karate Kid” and “The A-Team” at the multiplexes (neither of which I’ve seen, due to other assignments) and news in the Hollywood Reporter today that the “Arthur” remake is proceeding apace, with Jennifer Garner and Nick Nolte signed to supporting roles alongside Russell Brand and Helen Mirren. I’ll watch Brand and Mirren in anything, really, but why remake this movie? Why get between the moon and New York City? Sigh.
Anyway, it’s the final weekend for SIFF, with loads of screenings all over town. Tonight, I can strongly recommend “The Wildest Dream” in IMAX; other reviewers I know have liked “Paris Return” and “Come Undone.” On Saturday, try “Hipsters,” “Leaving,” the “Grease” sing-along (come on, what could be more fun?), “American: The Bill Hicks Story,” or “Room in Rome; I’ll be at “Solitary Man” (so I can review it for its opening next week) and “I Kissed a Vampire” (because you know I can’t resist a musical). Sunday recommendations include “Angel at Sea,” “From Time to Time,” “Garbo: The Spy” and the closing night film, “Get Low.” Seen anything you loved at SIFF this year? Anything you hated? Tell the rest of us.
