The new face of Lisbeth Salander

Well, it turns out that all that talk about Carey Mulligan and Ellen Page and Kristen Stewart came to nothing, or maybe was never true in the first place. Sony Pictures announced today that Rooney Mara has been cast as Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s planned three films of the Stieg Larsson trilogy: “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire,” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.” She’ll star alongside Daniel Craig, previously announced as Mikhail Blomkvist; Robin Wright has also been cast, as Blomkvist’s editor and sometimes girlfriend Erika. Filming begins next month in Sweden.
So, who is Rooney Mara? She’s the sister of Kate Mara (who I remember well from “Brokeback Mountain”), and she recently starred in the “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake, which I didn’t see, and she’s done a handful of other small roles. But obviously Fincher likes her; she’ll next be seen in his Facebook movie “The Social Network,” coming in October. And she looks like this:

Hmm. I’m mentally adding goth makeup and piercings and . . . well, maybe. We shall see. I like the idea of going with an unknown, though she’ll have a hard time making me forget Noomi Rapace in the Swedish-language films. (Photo credit: Merrick Morton, courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment).
