Popcorn & Prejudice: A Movie Blog

Just hold it right there . . . Johnny Depp, in “The Thin Man”?

Oh, no no no no no. New York Magazine’s Vulture blog reports today that Johnny Depp wants to star in a remake of “The Thin Man,” with Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) to direct. This will not do, at all. I bow to no one in my admiration for the wonderfully talented Depp, but Nick Charles is and always shall be one man only: William Powell, who’s dry-witted (and dry-martini’d) perfection in every scene of the classic 1934 comedy caper. And does this mean that some starlet out there has some idea that she could live up to Myrna Loy as Nora? Perish the thought. Just Stop It. No. For those familiar with this utterly delicious movie, I give you one line: “He didn’t get anywhere near my tabloids.”
For those unfamiliar, here’s the trailer. The movie’s available on DVD, and it’s sure to be the most entertaining 93 minutes you’ve had since . . . well, I don’t know what you’ve been up to, but trust me, this one’s a winner. Watch Powell here, and tell me if you can really imagine Depp doing it better. You already know what I think. Let’s hope this is just a rumor. (One more line: “Hello, sugar.”)
