It’s “Black Swan” weekend

“Black Swan” opens in Seattle this weekend, and there’s plenty of anticipation — I can’t remember the last time I’ve had so many readers asking when a movie will open. My review’s online now and I loved the movie (which isn’t particularly news, since I said the same after seeing it in Toronto in September), but I’ll be curious to hear what the rest of you think. The Los Angeles Times reported earlier this week on the movie’s age divide: that its audience was overwhelmingly younger (most under 35) and that critics under age 50 seemed to like it better than those over 50. (To which I have to say: who’s checking critics’ ages, anyway? I am, for the record, under 50, but I’m not going to tell you by how much.) Anyway, if you see the movie this weekend, chime in with your comments, regardless of how old you are.
In other “Black Swan” news, here’s an amusing interview with a New York City Ballet dancer who’s fact-checking the film. (No, she says, they don’t stretch out in creepy, dark basement hallways; but yes, she has met some crazy ballets moms not unlike the one played by Barbara Hershey.) And, if you’re not a regular balletgoer and are intrigued by the “Swan Lake” depicted in the movie, here’s a video snippet of a more conventional staging of the Black Swan solo danced by Gillian Murphy of American Ballet Theatre. Looks a little different, doesn’t it?
