Today’s Golden Globe silliness

Now don’t get me wrong; I enjoy watching the Golden Globes, what with the dresses and the stars having a bit too much champagne and the speeches that are always much looser and funnier than the Oscars. But can we at least agree that an organization that would nominate “Burlesque” in a Best Picture category (comedy or musical) is silly? And that the nomination of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp for their performances in “The Tourist” has less to do with their work than with wanting the glamorous duo to show up? (Here are just a few comedy/musical performances more deserving, all not nominated: Catherine Keener in “Please Give”; Mark Ruffalo in “The Kids Are All Right”; Kevin Kline in “The Extra Man”; Diane Keaton in “Morning Glory,” John C. Reilly in “Cyrus” — and, well, OK, it wasn’t really much of a year for comedies and musicals, was it?)
Anyhow. The Globes, in all their meaningless splendor, were announced today, and amidst all the usual suspects — lots of nominations for “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network,” all well deserved — a few more interesting nods emerged. Bravo to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, whoever they are, for noticing Emma Stone in “Easy A,” Jacki Weaver in “Animal Kingdom,” Paul Giamatti in “Barney’s Version,” Susanne Bier’s “In a Better World” for best foreign film (I saw this movie in Toronto and loved it; it’ll be in theaters here in the spring). More importantly, and more in the spirit of the Globes, who do you think will wear the goofiest dress to the party? My money’s on Mila Kunis (nominated for supporting actress for “Black Swan”, for no particular reason. And so the awards season continues.
