Now on DVD: “Animal Kingdom”

If you were paying attention during the supporting actress category in the Golden Globes the other night, you would have seen an unfamiliar face: the veteran Australian actress Jacki Weaver, smiling broadly as her name was read for her performance in the crime thriller “Animal Kingdom.” And then Melissa Leo won, and that was that for Jacki, who I hope had a lovely evening anyway. But if you, like me, saw “Animal Kingdom,” you’re not doubt rooting for a little more attention for this performance — Weaver, in the film, plays the year’s most astonishing villain; a sweet-voiced grandmother whose cool amorality is all the more shocking for being utterly casual. If you missed it (and quite possibly you did; it was in theaters only briefly, back in August), it’s out on DVD today, and is well worth a watch. Remember her name; I hope the Academy does.

That’s Weaver, with Joel Edgerton, in “Animal Kingdom.” By the way, her character is known as “Smurf.” (Photo courtesy Sony Pictures Classics)
