Anne Hathaway = Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises”

Well, here’s some nicely catty news. (Sorry.) Warner Bros. confirmed this morning that Anne Hathaway, she of the upcoming Oscar-hosting gig and rather “Dynasty”-ish Golden Globes dress, is signed to play Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Returns.” The studio also announced that Tom Hardy will play the villain Bane in the movie, which will open in theaters July 20, 2012. (Mark your calendars.) Deadline.com notes that Hathaway was up against a slew of actresses, including Keira Knightley, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively and Natalie Portman. I think Hathaway will do well — there’s a kind of feline allure to her, and Nolan always casts his villains well — but for me, Catwoman will always be Michelle Pfeiffer. Meow.
