On this greenest of days, you could of course watch “Once,” or “The Wind That Shakes the Barley,” or “The Quiet Man,” or “Waking Ned Devine,” or “The Dead” (my favorite), or any of a number of Irish movies that strike your fancy. But here’s one that might have slipped by most Seattle moviegoers; it was in theaters very briefly last spring, perhaps upstaged by another non-Irish movie with a very similar title. “The Eclipse,” starring Ciaran Hinds, is both character drama and ghost story, about a lonely widower who volunteers with a book festival in his small Irish town, and features a supporting performance by Aidan Quinn that’s so wickedly funny it almost deserves its own movie. Here’s the trailer; the movie’s well worth your time. And, for all those with a little bit of Irish in their genes or their hearts (I have both), happy St. Pat’s Day!
