Are audiences finally tiring of 3D?

I guess it’s not too surprising that the lackluster “PIrates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” made $90 million over the weekend; audiences love this franchise, for better or worse. What is surprising — and quite encouraging, for those of us wearying of overpriced, murky 3D — is evidence that audiences are beginning to reject the 3D format. Deadline.com cites an analyst’s report saying that 38 percent of the “Pirates” box office last weekend came from non-IMAX 3D: that’s a huge drop from last year’s averages (54 percent for “Shrek Forever After”; 57 percent for “How to Train Your Dragon”). Really, with rare exceptions (i.e. “Avatar”), has 3D added anything to a recent movie for you, other than a few dollars to the ticket price and a general dark fogginess to the screen? Will you make a point of seeing, say, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” in 3D? Looks like more and more of us are saying that 2D is plenty, thank you.
Meanwhile, in the summer movie sweepstakes — who would have thought that we’d be at the end of May, and “Fast Five” would be one of my favorites so far? That and “Bridesmaids,” to be precise. And neither of them is in 3D. But my favorite summer movie so far isn’t in theaters yet: “Midnight in Paris,” Woody Allen’s latest. Watch for it June 3. Now I’m off to three more SIFF screenings, still looking for gold.
