A pause, for an anniversary

Yesterday a very nice ten-year-old came to visit me (she’s a friend’s daughter) and told me all about her extracurricular activities, which included a recent ballet recital performance of “Cinderella.” I asked her what role she played, and she paused and her voice dropped down in wonderment, as if she was still astonished by the good fortune that came her way. “I was,” she said, almost in a whisper, ” a magical horse.”
Something else in my life is ten years old, too: my job as the movie critic of the Seattle Times, which I began ten years ago today (well, technically July 10, which was yesterday, but that was Sunday). Like any job, there are difficult days, with too many deadlines and nasty emails and publicists calling about movies I’ve never heard of and not enough Diet Coke. But for the most part, I feel like I got on a magical horse a decade ago, and that I’m so very, very lucky and grateful for the ride. I brought cupcakes in for my co-workers today, to thank them for putting up with me, and I wish I had enough for all of you P&P readers. Thank you for reading, and for taking the ride with me.
