Harry Potter and the Exploding Box Office

I didn’t go to see “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” this weekend (because I’ve already seen it), but a lot of you did: The movie set, as many expected, an all-time box office opening weekend record with $168.5 million, easily beating the old record of $158 million held by “The Dark Knight.” Theaters were packed all over the Seattle area this weekend, with some theaters resorting to 3 a.m. screenings. Best story I’ve heard so far: A colleague tells me that she sat next to a small boy (maybe 6 or 7 years old) at a “Harry Potter” screening at Thornton Place. When (spoiler alert!) Snape is attacked in the film, the kid was heard to say, “That’s no great loss.” (I disagree. But I would have cracked up.)
