A new “Funny Girl”?

This isn’t really even movie news, but it’s an excuse to post a clip I really like, so here it is. Barbra Streisand, a few decades back, rocketed to fame in the Broadway musical “Funny Girl” (and later movie, in which she’s perfection); now the musical’s being revived on Broadway, and there’s been much speculation about who the new Fanny Brice might be. Many have murmured that it might be Lea Michele, of “Glee,” but E!News reports today that it’s in all likelihood Lauren Ambrose, best known for her role as little sister Claire on HBO’s late, lamented “Six Feet Under.” But can she sing? Oh my yes. Check out this clip, from the last “Six Feet Under” season, in which Claire — a young, self-aborbed artist struggling to find herself — contemplates how she ended up as a temp employee in an office, wearing pantyhose.

Ambrose is, reports E!, a trained opera singer. Though she mostly works in TV (currently on “Torchwood”), she pops up occasionally in movies and is always a welcome sight. If you missed “Starting Out in the Evening,” in which she stars alongside Frank Langella, you missed a poignant actors’ showcase; check it out.
