Updates on James Bond, ‘Downton Abbey’

— The new James Bond movie, entitled “Skyfall” (which sounds to me like a cheesy amusement-park ride, but what do I know), starts shooting Monday, and director Sam Mendes introduced the cast at a London press conference today: 50 years to the day since Sean Connery was announced as the original Bond in “Dr. No.” Joining Daniel Craig will be Javier Bardem (as the bad guy), Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, Judi Dench, Ben Whishaw, and Bond Girls Berenice Marlohe and Naomie Harris (“28 Days Later,” two “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies). “Skyfall” will be released in the U.S. on Nov. 9. Craig, asked if he would be taking his shirt off during the film (questions at press conferences tend to run along these lines), said “It’s all part of the gig.” Indeed. But I still miss Pierce Brosnan.
— Good news for “Downton Abbey” fans: The British miniseries, created by Julian Fellowes, will have a third season. Fellowes, who will continue to write the show, said that it will follow the characters into the 1920s. Meanwhile, we in the U.S. have not yet seen Season 2 yet (coming in early January) and are getting a bit cranky, in a very Dowager Countess sort of way.
