Well, I wondered if this might be coming. After several days of increasingly offensive, classless, and generally idiotic statements from Academy Awards show producer/”Tower Heist” director Brett Ratner (oh, I’m not going to repeat them here; click the link or Google if you must know), the man has finally done the right thing and stepped down. The Hollywood Reporter reported this afternoon that Ratner had called Academy president Tom Sherak (who had defended Ratner yesterday) and resigned as show producer. He then issued a statement to the press, which reads in part:
I should have known this all along, but at least I know it now: words do matter. Having love in your heart doesn’t count for much if what comes out of your mouth is ugly and bigoted. With this in mind, and to all those who understandably feel that apologies are not enough, please know that I will be taking real action over the coming weeks and months in an effort to do everything I can both professionally and personally to help stamp out the kind of thoughtless bigotry I’ve so foolishly perpetuated.
So . . . bye-bye, Brett. Does this mean Eddie Murphy, who was Ratner’s choice to host the Oscars, is still in? Stay tuned; this story’s changing every minute.
