A cheat sheet for “Hugo”

I saw Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” last week and was enchanted by it (as was my 12-year-old niece, who’s a big fan of the book and was VERY skeptical that it could be made into a movie). Like Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” earlier this year, the film is peppered with real-life figures — in this case films as well as people. Should you wish to learn a little more about early French filmmaker Georges Melies (played by Ben Kingsley in the movie), or about the early movies so lovingly showcased in “Hugo,” here’s a useful starting point helpfully posted by Salon.com, where you can also watch a couple of the films.
