Meryl Streep Day continues: The accents

Isn’t this fun? My phone rang a minute ago and I was hoping, just for a second, that maybe it was Meryl, calling to say she appreciated the shout-out. Alas, just a publicist for an out-of-town film festival. Though I’ve interviewed many well-known actors in my years in this job, Streep is one I’ve never gotten anywhere close to; she doesn’t do a lot of press. (Because she’s Meryl Streep and she doesn’t have to.) But I’d love to interview her someday, as she seems like she’d be a kick — and, along with being charmingly funny, very wise about her craft. Maybe someday.
Anyway. When we think of Streep, we often think of accents, as she’s done so many perfectly tuned variants over the years. Here’s a nice video, put together by Slate magazine, with examples of several of her best.

And here, just for fun, is Streep on the Ellen DeGeneres show, playing an accent game and demonstrating that she’s a hell of a good sport.
