Happy birthday, Maggie Smith

(A personal note, to explain why my blogging may be a bit sparse for the next few days, and a story, not entirely un-movie-related: This week I am saying goodbye to my nearly 19-year-old cat, Myrna Loy, which is of course terribly sad. Last night, my goddaughter — who is a young up-and-coming actress living in Los Angeles, in town for the holidays — came over to have dinner with me, and brought me a Christmas present: a vintage photograph, probably a promotional postcard, of the real Myrna Loy, looking glamorous and knowing and just a little bit feline, as she always did. My goddaughter, who had no idea the cat was ailing, found the photo in a Hollywood thrift store and framed it for me, creating an unintended but beautiful memorial. Sometimes Christmas works in mysterious ways.)
