Oscar nominees by the numbers

A few numbers to ponder this morning . . .
62.6: Average age of the Best Supporting Actor nominees
39: Average age of the Best Supporting Actress nominees
42: Number of times composer John Williams has been nominated for an Oscar, including twice this year (he’s the most-nominated composer ever, and is second only to Walt Disney as the most-nominated individual ever)
17: Number of times Meryl Streep has been nominated for an Oscar, breaking her own record of 16. (Next most nominated: Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson, with 12 each)
2: Number of times Streep has won an Oscar (best actress for “Sophie’s Choice; best supporting actress for “Kramer vs. Kramer”)
29: Number of years since she last won
0: Number of times a dog has been nominated for an acting Oscar. Sorry, Uggie.
2: Number of songs deemed worthy of a Best Song nomination; an all-time low.
15: Number of times Woody Allen has been nominated for a writing Oscar (a record)
2: Number of times Allen has won a writing Oscar (for “Annie Hall” and “Hannah and her Sisters”)
25: Number of years since he last won
5: Number of acting nominees who played a nonfictional character
9: Number of acting nominees receiving their first-ever Oscar nod
1: Number of nominations received by a former star of “Flight of the Conchords” (Bret McKenzie, who wrote the nominated song “Man or Muppet”)
$169 million: Total box-office take of the highest-earning best picture nominee, “The Help”
And, a personal statistic:
6: Number of this year’s Oscar nominees with whom I have personally shaken hands (Alexander Payne, Michel Hazanavicius, Glenn Close, Gary Oldman, Steven Spielberg, Thelma Schoonmaker)
