One last pre-“Mad Men” Monday

One more week, then we’ll know if Don really married Megan, if Joan has had the baby (and if it has white hair like Roger), if Peggy truly has saved Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, if Pete is still a conniving twerp, if Bertram Cooper has really quit, if Betty is still married to Henry, if Sally’s pre-adolescence has calmed down, and if all the women are suddenly wearing go-go boots. Yes, “Mad Men” returns, after an interminable absence of 17 months, to AMC next Sunday night, and fans of the show have many, many questions. What are yours?
True confessions: I could have had answers to all of these questions myself today (not that I would have posted them, as it would be unfair to everyone who won’t see the show until Sunday), as AMC was kind enough to send me a screener of the opening episode. I planned last evening around it, poured a glass of wine, settled in comfortably with excited anticipation — and the DVD didn’t work. (Ever get that thing where the DVD player says “The disk is dirty,” even though you can’t see a speck on it, and you wipe it off anyway and turn things on and off and get annoyed and nothing happens? And then you play a different DVD and it runs with no problems? Argh. Double argh.) Anyway, no early preview of “Mad Men” for me. I’ll be watching with the rest of you on Sunday.
Meanwhile, “Mad Men” promotional merchandise is all over the place (been to Banana Republic lately? It’s as if Betty Draper is their cover girl) and Newsweek this week is planning a special issue designed to look exactly like the magazine in the mid-60s. And Matthew Weiner and the cast are giving interviews all over the place but not saying much. I’m done with the buildup; bring on the show!

(Photo by Michael Yarish/AMC) This is a photo from Episode 1 (a double episode!) of the new season, and what can we conclude? Pete’s still being bossy? Stan is still kind of a jerk? Maybe not too much time has passed since the last season, as Peggy’s hair looks the same and she’s wearing a dress I swear we’ve seen before? Details, details . . .
