A ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ musical?

Movies-turned-musicals are the latest thing on Broadway (currently running: “Sister Act,” “Ghost: The Musical,” “The Lion King,” “Once,”; coming soon: “Diner,” “Big Fish,” “Kinky Boots,” “A Few Good Men,” “Ever After,” “Bullets Over Broadway,” “Flashdance” and many, many more), but here’s one I hadn’t been paying much attention to: “Sleepless in Seattle,” the 1993 movie written and directed by the late Nora Ephron (oh, it doesn’t feel right to write that, does it?), will open as a new musical at the Pasadena Playhouse in June 2013. A director and musical director (both with Broadway credits) have been assigned, along with a writing team that includes Jeff Arch, who co-wrote the original screenplay with Ephron. The plan is, eventually, to go to Broadway. Charming as “Sleepless in Seattle” may be, I’m not at all sure it’s going to work on stage, without Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan; it seems inevitable that it would turn out kind of bland. “Bullets Over Broadway,” on the other hand, just might make a swell musical; supposedly it’s coming next year. We shall see
