OK, this is kind of cracking me up this morning. Universal Studios is at work finding a screenwriter for the upcoming movie version of E.L. James’ bestselling novel of S&M Lite, and after rejecting Bret Easton Ellis (much to his busily tweeted chagrin), four names remain in the running. According to the Hollywood Reporter, they are Karen Croner, Dan Fogelman, Kelly Marcel . . . and Veena Sud, former writer/creator/showrunner of “The Killing.” (Sud now has some spare time; “The Killing,” to the surprise of no one, was not renewed for a third season.) Now, I haven’t read “50 Shades of Grey,” but I’m suddenly picturing a lot of rhythmic gum-chewing, the couple calling each other on outdated cellphones and not knowing how to open email attachments, nobody in the movie being good at their actual job, and the female lead (whose name is Anastasia Steele, which just sounds to me like someone rejected from The Avengers) wearing the same bulky turtleneck every day. And, wait, ’50 Shades of Grey’ means it’s always raining out, right?
