Saoirse Ronan to star in ‘Mary, Queen of Scots’

I’ve kept an eye out for young Irish actress Saoirse Ronan since she dazzled me — and everyone else — five years ago in “Atonement,” as a young girl and budding novelist whose life is shattered by a lie of her own making. Now 18, she’s since been the haunting center of Peter Jackson’s otherwise failed “The Lovely Bones,” an action star in “Hanna,” a lost refugee in “The Way Back,” and recently finished shooting the lead role in “The Host,” based on the novel by Stephenie “Twilight” Meyer. But since “Atonement” I’ve been waiting for her first grown-up lead role, and it might just be coming up: She’ll play the title role in “Mary, Queen of Scots,” written by Michael Hirst (“Elizabeth,” TV’s “The Tudors”) and produced by Working Title, which has lately made a specialty of classy period films (it’s got “Anna Karenina” and “Les Miserables” coming up later this year.) “Mary, Queen of Scots” will shoot next year; the producers are currently looking for a director. Paging Joe Wright . . .
Speaking of “Atonement,” if you haven’t seen it and are looking for a movie to get lost in this weekend, do give it a look. It was one of my favorite movies of 2007 — and is a masterful adaptation of an Ian McEwan novel that I would have thought (in fact, I did think) unadaptable. I may just have to rewatch it this weekend myself. Enjoy the sunshine; see you Monday.

No mention of “Atonement” is complete without a picture of this spectacular dress, designed by Jacqueline Durran and worn to careless perfection by Keira Knightley. I wonder what became of it? (photo courtesy of Focus Features)
