Seth MacFarlane . . . really?

I know, I know, it’s last week’s news. But I’ve been on vacation for a week, during which time a lot more of you chimed in on ‘the worst movie I’ve ever seen’, and the surprise Oscar-host announcement came while I was away. Now that the dust has settled — what do you all think? I confess I’ve never watched “The Family Guy,” and I missed “Ted” this summer, so all I know about MacFarlane is his brief appearance on the Emmys (which, I thought, fell right on the cusp between funny and obnoxious) and the profile on him in the New Yorker a few months back. Sounds like the Academy is serious about going after the young male demographic, which I’m guessing abandoned the Oscars long ago — is this enough to bring them back? Do enough people who actually do watch the Oscars know who MacFarlane is? Does this out-of-the-box choice seem bold, or crazy? I’m excited for the singing, at least.
