Academy announces documentary shortlist

Catching up with yesterday’s announcement: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its shortlist yesterday for the Academy Award for best documentary. The following 15 titles will be narrowed down to five finalists when the nominations are announced January 10. As usual, a few of my favorites didn’t make the cut (where’s “Queen of Versailles”? “Brooklyn Castle”? “West of Memphis”? “Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel”? “First Position”?), but this is a strong list. Here are the titles, with notes on whether they’ve played Seattle yet.
“Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry” (theatrical run in August)
“Bully” (theatrical run beginning in April)
“Chasing Ice” (currently playing at the Egyptian)
“Detropia” (theatrical run in October)
“Ethel” (HBO film, played on cable)
“5 Broken Cameras” (theatrical run in August)
“The Gatekeepers” (will play here in early 2013)
“The House I Live In” (theatrical run last month)
“How to Survive a Plague” (theatrical run in October)
“The Imposter” (theatrical run in August)
“The Invisible War” (theatrical run in July)
“Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God” (HBO film, not yet aired)
“This Is Not A Film” (theatrical run in April)
“The Waiting Room” (no Seattle date currently; may play here in early 2013)
