Writers’ Guild nominations announced

If you’re looking for a safe prediction for the Academy Award writing categories, consider these: the Writers Guild of America award nominations, announced this morning. And they are . . .
Original screenplay:
“Flight” (John Gatins)
“Looper” (Rian Johnson)
“The Master” (Paul Thomas Anderson)
“Moonrise Kingdom” (Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola)
“Zero Dark Thirty” (Mark Boal)
Adapted screenplay:
“Argo” (Chris Terrio)
“Life of Pi” (David Magee)
“Lincoln” (Tony Kushner)
“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” (Stephen Chbosky)
“The Silver Linings Playbook” (David O. Russell)
Good choices, but I’m surprised to see Tom Stoppard’s smart distillation of “Anna Karenina” omitted from the adaptation category (many didn’t like Joe Wright’s directing choices for the film, but that had nothing to do with the script), and I would have loved to see a more low-profile film break through (a few favorites of mine: “Ruby Sparks,” “Liberal Arts,” “Middle of Nowhere”).
(Update: Turns out that “Anna Karenina,” “Middle of Nowhere,” and many others were not eligible for WGA awards, due to very specific Guild rules. )
Oscar nominations come early this year: on Thursday of next week (Jan. 10). We’ll talk more about them starting Monday. Enjoy the weekend!
