DGA nominations announced

It’s nominations season (the Oscars are coming right up, on Thursday morning), and today we hear from the Directors Guild of America, a group that holds a rather impressive statistic: Only six times, since the award’s inauguration in 1948, has the DGA award for best director not matched up with the Academy Award winner in that category. And this year’s nominees are:

Ben Affleck, for “Argo”
Kathryn Bigelow, for “Zero Dark Thirty”
Tom Hooper, for “Les Miserables”
Ang Lee, for “Life of Pi”
Steven Spielberg, for “Lincoln”
Note that all of these, except for Affleck (a first-time nominee), are previous DGA winners: Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker,” Hooper for “The King’s Speech,” Lee for “Brokeback Mountain” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” and Spielberg for “Saving Private Ryan,” “Schindler’s List,” and “The Color Purple.” Also note a couple of surprising absences: David O. Russell for “Silver Linings Playbook” and Quentin Tarantino for “Django Unchained.” If I had to predict the Oscar winner today, I’d say Spielberg; he’s beloved in the industry, hasn’t won for a while, and “Lincoln” is pretty great. But we’ll see.
