Ellen DeGeneres to host Oscars

Well, that was quick (and I’m a little late to respond, but I was stuck in a screening this morning): Ellen DeGeneres tweeted today — and the Academy swiftly followed with an official announcement — that she will be the host of the 86th annual Academy Awards, to be televisted Sunday, March 2, 2014. This will be DeGeneres’ second stint as host; she first had the job in 2007. I quite enjoyed her previous turn, and will look forward to seeing her again; she won’t be as controversial as Seth MacFarlane, to be sure, but she might be just as funny, in a different way. And, to all who grumble that she isn’t really a movie person . . . true, but Johnny Carson, considered one of the great Oscar hosts, wasn’t much of one either.
